The only thing that's mysterious is why people would drink cheap, fizzy beer.

Eli "the brewing goat" Dvorchik Brewing Round 1

Howdy folks, So last Week I brewed my first ever batch of beer. Its fermenting nicely now and it is an irish draught ale. The initial brewing took 3 hours, and I recorded the whole thing on video. In a few weeks I'm going to bottle it after fermentation. I am very eager to see how it comes out. Just some general brewing notes. I started the boiling at 4 pm, boiled 2.5 gallons of water then steeped the specialty grains for 20 minutes as the water was coming up to heat, but made sure not to boil t… Continue

Chris of thebeergeek.com New beergeek.TV Episode - Craft Beer Down Under, The Journey to Melbourne

Craft Beer Down Under, The Journey to Melbourne” is the latest episode of One Pint at a Time. Merideth turned 40 in December and she didn't really embrace the milestone. Instead of making our normal holiday pilgrimage to Europe, we decided a trip to Australia was what Merideth needed to cure the turning 40 blues. This trip marked our first beer adventure outside of North America or Europe. In two weeks of beer travel, we journ… Continue

Chris of thebeergeek.com Our Southern California Trip Report

The last couple of years, we have been adding breweries to the List at a fairly quick pace. During the Year in Beer, we reached 400 and in 2009, the 500 brewery milestone was ours. When we started thinking about 2010 goals, the 600 brewery milestone seemed like something realistic to shoot for. We took the opportunity of the three-day MLK weekend to get started on our 600 brewery quest. Our destination was Southern California, an area we have neglected for years. During our long weekend in Sout… Continue

Diane Thomas Hi's and Lo's

I've been down to the depths of beer drinking-(WV Sunnyside drinking 1% beer-the only kind allowed in the state), to the mildly dizzying heights of Dogfish Head brewing restaurant/Rehoboth B. with their high end glass. Ok, so Busch Garden's Oktoberfest is about as close as I'm getting to Munich, but I feel that middle of the road beers are the best all around and as hubby says, "If you're drinkin the booze, you're wearin the shoes." When you stumble, you know you've had enough! Continue

Paul Bailey Return to Prague - Part One

Prague is one of the world's top tourist destinations, and it is easy to understand why. This beautiful city, formerly hone to the kings of Bohemia, and for a time capital of the Holy Roman Empire, emerged relatively unscathed from World War Two, unlike many of its Central European counterparts. For the next 40 years the city was stuck in a virtual time-warp thanks to the stagnation that accompanied four decades of communist rule. Now the city has emerged to take its rightful place on the world… Continue

Joey Krietemeyer stuff my gf actually likes

My girlfriend does not like beer. Not at all. There are plenty of times I wonder how she puts up with me. Beer makes up over 60% of the things I talk, think and dream about. I have tried to find beers that she would enjoy. Over 99% of them I have gotten the response “It tastes like beer”. She is a hard customer to appease. I have found one that I can get that she will drink. I will talk more about that later. This time around I am going to talk about those beers we can get our lady’s to drink, i… Continue

Joey Krietemeyer what do you like to drink to?

I love drinking beer. I think this fact at this point is very well-known. There are a few things though that make me enjoy that cold one a little more. Whether I am sitting at the bar or imbibing a few in the comfort of my apartment, the soundtrack of my drinking experience is very important to me. I know that some people listen to certain music while cleaning or studying or other things to motivate them. It is just like that for me, but with drinking. There are also a few songs out there that c… Continue

Joey Krietemeyer Just take a sip...

I realized that there are people out there that have never tried a beer, much less tried to drink anything outside of his/her normal, daily beer. I need to include those people in my reviews because it is only fair. I can be harsh and my opinions a little rash and pointed. I do it for a better good though, one of informing the populous about beer. So this time I am going to chat a little about what I refer to as “Introductory Beers”. An “Introductory Beer” is a beer of a certain type that one w… Continue

Kathleen Stemwell Where do we go now...

I started homebrewing before I was 21, by helping my ex-boyfriend, and I have been captivated ever since. Last October, I got married, and hops was the predominant theme. They were on the invitations, in the floral arrangements, and in the IPA on tap. I converted several people, including my soon-to-be sister-in-law and at least one groomsman, to hop-headedness. It was glorious. Lately, some of my husband's family has started to brew. I've been wanting to help them more, but don't have enough fu… Continue

Chris Thornton Drink Smarter

I would drink a beer every now and then, but was not a beer drinker. I've bumped into some quality brews over the years and was interested in trying new things, but never went out of my way to look for a quality beer. About a year ago, I was trying a stout in one of those chain brew pub/restaurants that have been cropping up over the past few years, and started to compare it to a local porter in my head. I was wishing I had the local brew, and I realized -why- I was, though I wouldn't have been… Continue

Chris of thebeergeek.com Our Australia Trip Report

We finally made it to Australia. After years of talking about it, we made the journey Down Under for Merideth's 40th birthday. We didn't really know what to expect. We knew there was a budding craft beer industry. We had a list of breweries to visit and a few contacts. But that was it. We spent two weeks in Australia. During that time, we drove from Sydney to Melbourne and back, adding 2,000 miles to our Ford Falcon XR6's odometer. Most important, we added 22 new breweries to "the List". A big… Continue

Neil Rhodes I want more beer!

I moved from Toronto to Edmonton in September of 2008, even though the beers here are great, the west doesn't have the same access to beer as Ontario does. Every time I go home I can get beers from all around the world, Trappist Ales, Porters, craft breweries from the US, Canada, Europe etc. So Every time I come home I have a suit cased filled with exotic beers that are not available here. Again, the beer selection in Edmonton is great, I also know it could be so much greater. So if anyone is tr… Continue

John Bidwell Pricing for Perception - How our perceptions influence what we pay for our beer.

How do your perceptions influence the beers you buy? Think about the beers you feel are of the highest quality. What creates our perception of quality in a craft beer? Do we rely solely on the taste of the beer? Could it also be based on the ingredients used? Does the brewing location influence your perception of quality? How about labeling, packaging and nomenclature? Does this influence perception of quality? If Fat Tire were introduced nearly twenty years ago in a can, would it have been as s… Continue
